Work Experience Students
We only provide work experience if we believe that there are long-term possibilities for future positions with us. The level of training we provide involves just too great an investment to justify short-term arrangements.
All support staff undertake an extensive induction program on joining the firm, and training in our systems and procedures is an ongoing process. We are leaders in using information technology, document design, and plain language communication.
Experience and above average academic performance, in subjects relevant to our service fields and solutions, is considered important in our assessment of candidates. For example, for us highly relevant fields of law include all fields of intellectual property, contracts and other commercial law, corporate and business structuring, and litigation practice and procedure.
Our firm's current positioning means that generally if a law student or lawyer has not studied intellectual property law then it will be the rare candidate that we would employ. Past or present employeees who have not studied intellectual property law have long years of experience or academic studies for example in IT, taxation law, accounting, business management or litigation.
Certainly, it would be true to say we are an "entertainment law firm" or an "IP law firm" or an "IT and IP law firm". However, we believe it is more accurate to say we are a business law firm specialising in technology and IP law, management and commercialisation.
We do a great deal of IP and IT advisory and dispute resolution work. The work is for a wide range of clients, not just clients in the entertainment or IT sectors. For example we advise clients who are handbag manufacturers, wine makers, seafood distributors, business consultancies, inventors and financial services advisers.
It would greatly aid any application you may make if you can demonstrate industry or business knowledge or experience. You may have conducted special research, written a major thesis, or worked in a non-legal or semi-legal position. As a short list, prominent sectors for our firm include the entertainment industries, Web, e-commerce and IT sectors, retailing, product distribution and business consultancies or service businesses in various niche fields.
We look for team players with strong communication, project management and client management skills. Some work involves considerable academic rigour best conducted by an individual lawyer for subsequent review by others. In contrast, other work calls for brainstorming sessions between our people often during conference calls with clients. To illustrate by example, in trade mark registration work we regularly brainstorm ideas about client's proposed word or logo trade mark or domain name. During the brainstorming session we collaboratively test options for our client to select the one which has the optimum mix of legal, design and marketing elements.
In applying for a position you should be guided by the knowledge that Dilanchian is a firm which often combines methodologies and solutions from law and other disciplines. If a client's needs require it, we may integrate legal advice with advice from other disciplines. For example, for clients involved in Web development or IT systems integration we apply the law relevant to information technology and we may also draw on in-house or external technical knowledge of IT systems and management know-how regarding project management for IT services, products and ventures.
You will join in the knowledge that your career will develop especially because our firm is being built by all of us here in collaboration and driven by the need to serve our clients professionally.
